This Framework was developed in 2020 as part of The Equity Index’s pilot project, during we tested a small number of internal and external indicators with pilot organisations. As such, this Framework is not meant to be comprehensive, but we offer it as a starting point for organisations based in the UK or elsewhere in the Global North that deliver development-focused projects in the Global South to assess how equitable their practices are, and encourage them to reflect on additional dimensions that are relevant to their specific work and context.
The Equity Index Indicator Assessment Framework (docx)
DownloadCo-Founder of The Equity Index and Founder & Director of The Advocacy Team Lorriann Robinson gave oral evidence to the UK's International Development Committee in Parliament as part of their inquiry on the Philosophy and culture of aid: racism in the aid sector. We also submitted written evidence to the inquiry, which you can access here.
Given the many different uses of the term that are in operation within or beyond the development sector, this briefing note seeks to provide a brief overview of a range of definitions of equity, within the context of global development and beyond.
The Equity Index has produced a mapping of a range of sources we have learned from and intend to build on as we develop the first iteration of the index. The sources have been divided into two main sections: 1.Comparator organisational indices that have components or indicators that are relevant to different aspects of equity and 2.Comparator indicators/datasets, which are other data sources that have measures or indicators relevant to different aspects of equity.
We have collated a set of resources on equity in the development sector. This list is by no means comprehensive. It seeks to highlight a few key resources (largely from the past few years) in six different categories. The primary focus is on practitioner perspectives and opinions, complemented by research reports. We welcome new resources, which can be sent to us via the Contact Us page. Please note citations do not necessarily mean endorsement.
We would like to thank Sarah Quinn for her support in compiling these resources.
